Hose Reel is a critical component in the FPSO/FSO offloading system. It is used to store and handle the hose during offloading. The hose is stored on Hose Reel on deck. Generally, the Hose Reel is deployed at aft of the offshore production or storage unit.

The Hose Reel in operation position, all the structural engineers have considered the drum in horizontal position and withstand weight of hoses with environmental load act on the drum and transfer to Hose Reel foundation through the drum end supports.

However, some structural engineers may not have considered the fabrication yard erect the drum in vertical position and install the gear ring, gear box and drive end support. When drum flipping and install on the Hose Reel foundation, the strength of drum end supports may not enough strong during the Hose Reel flipping from vertical to horizontal position.

For this case, the drum structure and drum end support need to be reinforced and the lifting padeye/lug may need special design to minimize the construction work with short schedule.

After flipping simulation study found that normal lifting padeye is not suitable to be used in this case as the lifting sling has rotating and swinging over a plane at the lifting point. After calculation and structural analysis, we proposed a trunnion type of lifting lug to lift and flip the drum from vertical to horizontal position.

The Hose Reel lifting and flipping operation save and successfully installed on the Hose Reel foundation.
